Pickup is at 5:30 AM. Set your alarm and be ready at your hotel lobby on time. The early start ensures you have maximum time at both monasteries and avoids the midday desert heat.

The climb to Saint Anthony’s cave involves uneven stone steps and desert terrain. Sturdy, comfortable walking shoes or trainers are strongly recommended — especially if you plan to make the ascent to the hermit’s cave.

Consider bringing a small amount of Euros, USD, or Egyptian pounds for monastery donation boxes (spiritually customary), optional souvenirs, and tips for your guide and driver if you feel they deserve it — which they will.

Photography is permitted in most areas of both monasteries, but always follow the guidance of monastery staff and respect any no-photography signs. Do not photograph monks without their permission. The views from the cave are simply unmissable.

The Eastern Desert can be intensely hot. Even though modesty clothing covers your skin, apply sunscreen to your face, neck, and hands. Sunglasses and a hat are strongly recommended. Bottled water is provided throughout.
